BYD closed September with its strongest month of 2026, delivering 463,561 new-energy vehicles. The headline is a rebound, but the split underneath it is the more useful story for anyone shopping in the Gulf, the UK or the US: battery-electric models are carrying the growth, and plug-in hybrids are flat to slightly down.

What the September numbers show
According to figures reported by ElectricCarsReport, electrive and other outlets, BYD’s September total was up about 17% on a year earlier and roughly 5% above August’s 440,293. Passenger-car sales were 456,713 units, made up of 273,143 battery-electric vehicles (a monthly record) and 183,570 plug-in hybrids.
That puts BEVs at close to 60% of BYD’s passenger mix. Year on year, BEV sales grew by about a third, while plug-in hybrid sales slipped by roughly 2%.
Exports are doing the heavy lifting
Overseas shipments rose about 154% year on year to around 180,000 vehicles, close to 39% of the month’s total. Sales inside China fell by roughly 13% against September last year, which is why the export figure matters so much to BYD’s overall result. Overseas volume did dip slightly from August’s record, so the trend is still strong rather than still accelerating.
What it means for buyers in our markets
More export volume tends to mean broader dealer networks and more trim choice in markets such as the UAE and UK. The BEV-led mix also matches what we see in the catalog: the BYD Seal and Atto 3 sit at the centre of the brand’s electric range, and you can browse everything on the BYD brand page.

Plug-in hybrids remain a large part of BYD’s volume, and for drivers who want electric running without range or charging worries they are still a strong option. Models like the Seal U DM-i are listed in our plug-in hybrid catalog. The sales data suggests, though, that BYD’s growth is currently coming from pure-electric demand.
A note on the numbers
Outlets round and categorise export figures slightly differently (for example, passenger cars plus pickups versus total overseas sales), so treat the overseas total as approximate. The BEV, PHEV and total figures above were consistent across the sources we checked. Prices and specifications for specific models remain on each model page.
